International Finger-Style Guitar Festival

IFSGF ( International Finger-Style Guitar Festival )

In that year, the fingers of us were dancing on the six strings performing our youth and enthusiasm, of which scene seemed to happen yesterday and is unforgettable. Not knowing when, we had to put down the guitar to face the real life because of the heavy pressure; not knowing when, the hands we used to play the strings were covered by the dusts of earthliness. But, the affection will be kept in the heart forever and dreams will never be given up as we must stick to the niceness in our heart to make it more abundant and fulfilled.

之後他逐漸開始引進一些美國的獨立音樂,1976 年,他作為演出贊助方在京都市舉辦了 Mud Acres(Happy Traum, Artie Traum, Bill Keith, Jim Rooney, John Herald and Arlen Roth),Geoff Muldaur & Amos Garrett, 還有 Guy Clark 的演出。

2000 年的時候,Pooh 準備開設自己的獨立廠牌,名叫 Slice of Life Records,居住在美國紐約伍斯托克的 Happy Traum 的首張獨奏專輯 “Bright Morning Stars” 在 2001 年作為 Slice of Life 出版的首張CD唱片再版發行,Happy Traum 也是 Homespun Tapes 的創始者 —— 最出名的專門出版樂器教學 DVD 的廠商,這這專輯 “Bright Morning Stars” 1980年首次出版,但一直沒有出版 CD 格式,Pooh 就幫助這位老朋友完成了這種專輯的 CD 出版,之後 Slice of Life Records 出版了 70 年代傳奇歌手 Eric Kaz 為發行的一些曲目,做成一張專輯叫做 “1000 years of sorrow”,Kaz 2002 年也來到日本來舉辦自己的個人音樂會,全程還有電視臺的轉播。

” The real man that love Guitar Music for his life ” Hideaki “Pooh” Matsuoka was born in 1951 in Hyogo prefecture, Japan. He loves music ever since he can remember. At his age 12, the Beatles knocked him out and he went down the usual path to rock music freak after that: Cream, Jimi Hendrix,Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones to name a few. At his university days, he had beenlisten to many kinds of foreign music and he was very interested in not onlysolo fingerstyle guitar music such as John Renbourn, Bert Jansch, Stefan Grossman but singer/songwriters in 1970’s such as James Taylor, Paul Simon, Neil Young, Carole King, Dan Fogelberg, to name a few. Just one month after he graduated from university with a major in social psychology,he started to do a business for importing/exporting music in Osaka in April, 1973 under the name of his own company, POOH YOKOCHO, INC. He also managed his own recordshop, POOH YOKOCHO, in Osaka at the same time. Pooh Yokocho means Pooh Corner inJapanese and he took the name from a book title “Winnie the Pooh / House at PoohCornber” by A.A.Milne (an English author, best known for his books about the teddy bear Winnie-the-Pooh). That is the reason why Matsuoka has been called as “Pooh”or “Pooh-san” which means Mr. Pooh by many pro musicians in all over the world. In early 1970’s, it goes without saying that what he was selling is analog LP records as a CD (compact disc) had not appeared yet by 1982, music video and guitar tab/music books.

In 1975, his company and record shop moved to Kyoto where he has still been living by now for more than 35 years. He started to import and distribute many independent labels mainly from USA concretely. In 1976, he as a concert sponsor had three concerts in Kyoto for Mud Acres (Happy Traum, Artie Traum, Bill Keith, Jim Rooney, John Herald and Arlen Roth), Geoff Muldaur & Amos Garrett, and Guy Clark who is a legendary singer/songwriter from Texas, USA. In 1980’s, he has been sometimes asked to write an article about acoustic music suchas folk, rock/pops in 1970’s, blues, celtic music, fingerstyle guitar music for some major music magazines in Japan. Doing his own business, he still has been wiring about acoustic guitar music for major acoustic guitar magazines since that time. In 1990’s, he was asked to contact Peter Finger by Isato Nakagawa, a legendary finger-style guitarist in Japan since early 1970’s.

Nakagawa wanted to invite one of world-class foreign solo fingerstle guitarist to Japan and he talked about it with Pooh-san. When Pooh-san recommended Peter Finger as the suitable artist to Nakagawa, a plan of Peter Finger’s first Japan tour was just settled. It’s the very first time for well-known fingerstyle guitarist to visit Japan for a concert tour on a full scale. After that, Isato invited many foreign fingerstyle guitarists such as Preston Reed, Franco Morone, Jacques Stotzem, Ed Gerhard with Pooh-san’s suggestion and support. In 2000, Pooh-san started to prepare for his own independent label, Slice of Life Records and Happy Traum’s first solo album entitled “Bright Morning Stars” as the first Slice of Life release was re-released as CD format in January 2001. Happy Traum is a legendary acoustic guitarist and singe/songwriter who live in Woodstock, New York, USA. He is also well-known person as the president of Homespun Tapeswho is the most succesful instruction DVD company for acoustic musical instrumentsfor more than 40 years. “Bright Morning Stars” was originally released as hisfirst solo album in 1980 and had never be reissued as CD by that time Pooh-san offered about his plan to Happy Traum who is a good friends of Poo-san’s since 1973. After that, Slice of Life released one of the most legendary singer/songwriter in 1970’s Eric Kaz’s previously unreleased recordings and the album is entitled “1000 years of sorrow”. Kaz came to Japan for his first solo concert tour in 2002 and there was TV coverage of his concert on the tour. In 2007, Slice of Life Records started fingerstyle solo guitarists series. Theyhas released today’s most wonderful fingerstyle quitarits such as Sungha Jung (Korea), Erik Mongrain (Canada), Kieran Murphy (Australia), Trace Bundy (USA), Bob Evans (Canada), Ben Lapps (USA), Justin King (USA) since that time. Also, they recorded and released three Japanese guitarists such as Masa Sumide, Satoshi Gogo who is a winner of Japanese Fingerstyle Guitar Championship at his age 15 in 2004, Tomoaki Kawabata who is also a winner of Japanese Fingerstyle Guitar Championship 2011. A chairman and orinator of IFSGF, Huang Chia-Wei, decided to invite Pooh-san as one of the judges for two contests when he was thinking of the first year of IFSGF 2010 without a moment’s hesitation.

In 2012, by Chia-Wei’s request, Pooh-san takes on the responsibility of acting as consultant for IFSGF.
